The Position
The City of Carlsbad currently has an opening available for a part-time Library Clerk position in the Administration Division at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, assigned specifically to library courier and mail clerk duties. The library courier transports boxes of library materials and mail among the three library locations and city offices. The library mail clerk receives and sends shipments and mail at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. Applicants must have a valid California Driver License and be comfortable driving a city cargo van. They should also be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Part-time positions in the Library & Cultural Arts department are not to exceed 980 hours per fiscal year. Scheduled work hours for the position are generally weekday office hours at the Dove Library and could include some weekend or evening hours as needed, for a total number of hours not to exceed 19 hours per week. The current vacancy is for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday courier, working 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Key Responsibilities
Part-time Library Clerk assigned to courier and mail room duties perform the following functions:
- As a courier, this position will deliver mail, books and other items as needed between city facilities using a city vehicle.
- Accept mail and deliveries from the US Postal Service and other carriers (UPS, FedEx, etc.).
- Sort incoming mail and distribute it to recipients.
- Assist volunteers with sorting daily book donations.
Qualifications

Experience & Education
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would qualify. For the part-time Library Clerk assigned to courier and mail room duties, a typical way to acquire the skills and abilities would include graduation from high school and one year of general clerical experience. Physical requirements include safely handling up to 50 pounds; for example loading boxes of books into the courier van and sorting donated books.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand. While performing the duties, employees of this class are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret people and situations; learn and apply new information or skills; and interact with staff and others encountered in the course of work. When performing courier duties, employee must be able to safely handle up to 50 pounds.
